  We prove that a lattice $\Gamma$ in $PS{L}_2(\mathbb{R})$ or $PS{L}_2(\mathbb{C})$ has positive trace gap, meaning that its traces are uniformly separated, if and only if it is derived from an admissible quaternion algebra.
